Disposable by Zois Geros
Curated by Alia Tsagkari
Haus N is pleased to announce Disposable, a solo exhibition by Greek visual artist Zois Geros, on view from October 25 to November 10, 2024. The exhibition presents Geros’ latest body of work, with most pieces created in the last six months, offering a profound examination of the transient and consumable nature of contemporary life. Through an allegorical framework and a personal aesthetic, Geros examines the commodification of human experience, addressing the fleeting nature of love, spirituality, and the very concept of art itself.
Geros’ latest body of work, emerges from a deeply personal perspective, concentrated in his poignant statement: ‘I feel disposable in a disposable world.’ In a culture where primeval human experiences—love, beauty, time, and sex—are increasingly commodified, Geros poses the unsettling question: Have they always been this way, or is this a unique affliction of our time? His work avoids moralisation; instead, it seeks to express the pervasive dissociation and existential emptiness that define the human condition today, marked by fleeting emotional highs and an inevitable return to inertia. His art becomes a visual manifestation of this cyclical existence, revealing the profound tension between momentary vitality and enduring numbness.
Drawing on his long-standing fascination with Greek mythology and archetypal symbolism, Geros infuses the ancient narratives into his contemporary practice, using them as vehicles to explore the complexities of modern life. His vivid compositions, rich in symbolic content, reflect the persistent relevance of primordial symbols in today’s world, while also engaging with the subcultures of Athens and the mystical undercurrents of everyday life. Through painting and installation, Disposable evokes a world where the real and the unreal blur, where art itself becomes a fragile, consumable experience. Yet, within that fragility, Geros finds moments of reflection and respite, offering viewers a chance to confront their own place in this disposable reality.
